چکیده
Introduction: Ochronosis is a rare autosomal recessive disorder of tyrosine metabolism, leading to deposition of elevated levels of homogentisic acid in different parts of the body, especially in fibrous and cartilaginous tissues. The current study presents a case with delayed diagnosis and osteoporotic fracture in addition to severe osteoarthritis and calcification. Case Presentation: A 56-year-old female with low back pain and painful knees and hips referred to the center. Right hip arthroplasty was performed to manage her severe osteoarthritis. Although characteristic features of ochronosis such as urine darkening, subcutaneous pigmentation and degenerative ochronotic arthropathy resembling osteoarthritis were observed in this patient, surprisingly it remained unrecognized until the 5 decade. Bone mineral density showed that osteoporosis and zoledronic acid had

OBJECTIVE The aim of the study was to assess the use of Non Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) in patients with a history of osteoporotic vertebral fractures. METHODS We investigated 119 patients with postmenopausal osteoporosis complicated by one or more non recent vertebral fractures. RESULTS More than 60% of the patients took at least one dose of NSAID weekly. The most prescribed...

Osteoporosis has become a major medical problem as the aged population of the world rapidly grows. Osteoporosis predisposes patients to fracture, progressive spinal deformities, and stenosis, and is subject to be a major concern before performing spine surgery, especially with bone fusions and instrumentation. Osteoporosis has often been considered a contraindication for spinal surgery, while i...

Alkaptonuria is a rare disease in which a deficiency in the homogentisate 1, 2-dioxygenase enzyme results in a buildup of homogentisic acid. Ochronosis, the deposition of excess homogentisic acid in connective tissue, causes brownish-black pigmentation and weakening of the tissue ultimately resulting in chronic inflammation, degeneration, and osteoarthritis. There is currently no definitive cur...

Alkaptonuria is disorder of tyrosine metabolism due to deficiency of homogentisic oxidase characterized by excretion of homogentisic acid in urine, deposition of oxidized homogensitate pigments in connective tissues and articular cartilages (ochronosis). The result is dark pigmentation and weakening of the tissues resulting in chronic inflammation and osteoarthritis. Management of alkaptonuric ...

Osteoporosis associated with pregnancy and lactation is a less commonly known condition and often overlooked. The prevalence, exact aetiology and its pathogenesis are unknown. It is commonly seen in first three months after delivery in primigravida. It is often undiagnosed because of it not suspected n and X-rays and densitometry are avoided if possible during pregnancy and lactation. If missed...
